CLINICAL JUDGEMENT IS REQUIRED This website is based on the guidance contained within the NICE publication “Preoperative tests: The use of routine preoperative tests for elective surgery” (June 2003). It has been developed independently of NICE with the intention of replacing the look up tables contained in this document. This guideline covers routine preoperative tests for people aged over 16 who are having elective surgery. It aims to reduce unnecessary testing by advising which tests to offer people before minor, intermediate and major or complex surgery, taking into account specific comorbidities (cardiovascular, renal and respiratory conditions and diabetes and obesity). Moreover, our results demonstrate high usages of preoperative test and wide institutional variation, which may indirectly reflect the overuse of preoperative blood tests. 9 Previous studies, generally from the United States 10, 19 and Canada, 12, 13 showed that high rates of usage and interinstitutional variability are present for various preoperative tests before low-risk surgery. Additional preoperative blood or urine testing is at the discretion of the admitting surgeon, the referring physician, or the anesthesiologist.
