Stigmatisering, coping och handikappupplevelse: Intervjuer

The WCCL contains 66 items that describe thoughts and acts that people use to deal with the internal and/or external demands of specific stressful encounters. The Ways of Coping Questionnaire (Folkman & Lazarus, 1988) is a 66-item, 4-point scale that measures the extent to which the individual used a particular coping strategy in a stressful situation. Lazarus and Folkman defined two major coping categories: (1) emotion-focused coping, which refers to the regulation of emotions that are generated by the appraisal process, such as anger or sadness in response to the appraisal of loss, anxiety, or fear in the case of the appraisal of threat, and eagerness and excitement, mixed with some worry, in the case of the appraisal of challenge; and (2) problem-focused coping, which refers to the management of the problem itself. Lazarus and Folkman (1984) designated two general types of coping strategies, problem-focused coping, and emotion-focused coping. Problem-focused coping is cognitive and behavioral efforts to alter a stressful situation, and emotional-focused coping is cognitive and behavioral efforts to reduce the distress produced by a stressful situation. Folkman and Lazarus (1988) developed the ways of coping scale, a checklist of problem- and emotion-focused coping strategies that might be used in a variety of stressful situations.

The Ways of Coping Checklist (WCCL) is a measure of coping based on Lazarus and Folkman’s ( 1984) stress and coping theory. The WCCL contains 66 items that describe thoughts and acts that people use to deal with the internal and/or external demands of specific stressful encounters. The influence of Lazarus and Folkman's (1984) transactional theory of stress and coping is remarkable and remains the cornerstone of psychological stress and coping research across multiple fields. In this chapter we review the key components of this theory, focusing specifically on the effectiveness of the problem‐focused and emotion‐focused coping taxonomy. Coping has long been recognized as an important construct in studying and dealing with people and their health.

Lazarus and Folkman’s model stated that successful coping mechanisms depend on the emotional functions related to the problem. Lazarus classified eight such functions that most of us use for active coping. Coping has long been recognized as an important construct in studying and dealing with people and their health.
